Rage Quit Rants
Just taking a minute to bitch about the exact kind of thing I expected to see once Microsoft started turning the XBox from gaming system to multimedia device…
Let’s take the nice, peaceful (well… mostly peaceful) experience of gaming and turn it into a political argument battleground for everyone, because there’s nothing I want more than to be assaulted by › Continue reading
Am I the only one who still sits here and thinks about how lame it is that Microsoft uses the same damn sound for getting a message, chat invite, being disconnected, getting a party invite, download finishing, etc….? I mean, here’s a company that’s releasing things like the Kinect or blockbuster games like Halo, and they still can’t give us unique sounds for different types of notifications? wtf.
I know it’s not exactly the most critical part of gaming, but come on, how hard could it possibly be to dump a .wav file or whatever format they use for XBox and associate it with different notices so we don’t have to look down to see what kind of notice just came up on our screen? It may not seem like much, but when you have a friends list that’s maxing out at 100 people and they’re constantly signing on and off when you’re in the middle of an intense gaming session, it would just be so much easier if you could instantly know if it’s something you give a shit about, like a party invite to talk to some friends, or if it’s just one of those new “friends” you made 6 months ago (that you haven’t spoken to in 5 months) signing in.
I know this is a small gripe in the big picture, but come on Microsoft, you can do better than this!
Disclaimer: Call of Duty (insert any version here) is an awesome game and hands down one of the best console FPS series to ever be released. I have an enormous amount of respect for the people who make these (and all) games. This is simply a nit picking rant list, so lighten up Francis.)
Every time they release a new Call of Duty, there are always new things to play like weapons, game modes, and so on, but what about the things that we want gone from Call of Duty?
Well this is my own list…
Top 10 Things I Still Hate About Call of Duty
1) Peer to Peer Based Hosting
Treyarch decided to do the PC players a favor and give them some dedicated servers to run their game from to help minimize the effects of laggy game play (which is what causes most of us to need to buy new controllers after they’ve been thrown across the room at 80mph) but left the console users to fend for themselves. Initially, I believed it was probably a major undertaking for them to setup and maintain servers to provide their players with the best experience possible, perhaps utilizing some lag reduction algorithms to make the playing field fair so that almost every game isn’t a landslide victory for one team or the other depending who has the host…. then I saw the reports that Activision is braggi… I mean hailing Black Ops as “the biggest launch in entertainment” due to it’s record breaking 5.6 million copies sold (which translates to roughly $360 million dollars. Source: TeamXBox.com) yet still no servers…
$360 million dollars within the launch of the game and we’re still forced to deal with sub-par connections and games being hosted from some kid’s XBox in the middle of nowhere. WTF.
2) Being knifed while I’m in the middle of shooting someone in the face
This is one that’s been bothering me and most people I know since they started playing Call of Duty. There you are, minding your own business, running around lookin for someone to pap in the face and all of a sudden someone comes around a corner about 20 feet in front of you. You stop suddenly, take aim, and begin to fire as you watch the hit markers pop up letting you know your bullets are making contact… and then you’re knifed in the face and you die.
This is pure bullshit at it’s finest. Treyarch mentioned they took out the Commando perk because it gave players an unfair advantage while also being completely unrealistic to knife someone from that far away….. yet here we are with a game that shows us hit markers when we shoot someone and it still let’s them knife you. This should not be possible. If the game is showing you a hit marker, it should automatically disable the ability to knife someone as soon as you’re shot and a hit marker comes up. If you believe you would be able to knife someone with enough force to kill them while also being shot in the face by an AK-47, I will gladly go to a shooting range to test this theory with you as long as you are the one who has the knife.
If you are not willing to take this challenge because you now realize it’s completely ridiculous, thank you for finally agreeing with me, if you still don’t agree with me, you probably suck at the game and need all the advantages you can get. Call of Duty often makes a mockery of the term “Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”.
3) Sniper Rifle One Shot Kills
I’m not against being able to kill a player with one shot, in fact I think it’s important to always have moments when a player is able to kill someone with one shot if they’re taking a skilled shot. I’m not, however, in favor of allowing sniper rifles to have one shot kills while a weapons such as the AK-47 with it’s 7.62 x 39 take 4 or more shots to take someone down. I noticed it a long time ago in COD4, all you had to do was make sure that when the sniper rifle recoiled, the cross hairs just had to travel across whoever you wanted to kill. Meaning… you could aim to the left of someone and pull the trigger and turn to the right at the same time… anything the crosshairs of your scope would touch while the sound of your rifle shooting was still audible would be dead. I could be wrong on how they program these things to work, but there just seem to be way too many unskilled “snipers” running around getting one shot kills when they really weren’t aiming at much of anything (or at least weren’t anywhere near being accurate)
4) Weapons Are Still Unbalanced
This goes right along with the bullshit one shot sniper kills, the weapons just don’t seem to be realistically balanced enough still. I’ve had plenty of encounters where I’m using any random weapon and I’m just unloading into people (which show hit markers, so I know I’m making contact) and then they turn around and shoot me two or three times and I’m the one who dies…. What really blows my mind is that this seems to be extra true with the M-60, fucking Rambo’s gun, really?! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Rambo, observe the awesomeness of the 80′s (and an M-60).
Ok, let me just point something out here…. you’re being shot with bullets, period. I don’t care if it’s from a Skorpion, an M-16, or a damn M-60, the bullets are metal, they are piercing your flesh, and your organs are exploding, There should be no gun which takes more than 4 hit markers to kill someone, end of story.
5) No Hardcore Domination Mode
Might as well keep linking one problem to the next right? So how does this link up to unbalanced weapons you ask? Simple.
Many people reading this list would automatically think “Why don’t you just go play hardcore mode, it’s more realistic like you want” and I would totally agree with them… except for the fact that for whatever reason, Domination is still being left out of Hardcore modes even though it’s one of the most played game types. Can someone please tell me why Domination is still being left without a hardcore mode? I mean, seriously, new game modes have entered the Call of Duty series like Capture the Flag, we also now have Core, Barebones, Pro, and Prestige lobbies, and yet there’s still no Hardcore Domination. What. The. Fun. ?!
6) There’s Always a Back Door
One of the biggest reasons why I personally would never put any Call of Duty on a list of serious war simulation games is due to it’s completely unrealistic map nature. The maps are generally either tiny or huge and filled with openings and doors literally everywhere. While it’s a great way to keep Call of Duty’s action going because you can never be sure no one is coming up behind you, it also kills the ability to take a calm collected approach utilizing a real strategy because chances are, in about 5 seconds, some obnoxious 12 year old is going to run in a door behind you and one shot you with a sniper rifle from 4 feet away after spawning right there(while you’re emptying an entire clip into his chest, sorry, you die.)
7) Where The Hell Did I Spawn?
Here’s another reason why you can’t properly utilize real strategies in Call of Duty… you never know where you’re going to spawn, nor will you be spawning with the same people each time.
So… how are you supposed to properly come up with plans of attack and assigning people on the squad a job when you have absolutely no clue where you’ll pop up next or what battle you’ll get thrown into? Easy, you can’t.
Still surprising to me that you can’t select a member of your team to always spawn with or at least have some kind of network of inaccessible spawn locations around the maps to prevent spawn camping (that’s when losers just find out where you’re spawning and kill you as soon as you spawn. Cheap way for people who suck at games to get some points too.).
Aside from just the “strategy killing” effect it has, it also just sucks to be on a big map and get killed after running for 2 minutes just to find someone and then have to re-spawn all the way out in the middle of nowhere and have to run for another 2 minutes just to find people again, and so on… I don’t know why they feel the need to spawn people so far away from the battle sometimes, it’s just flat out annoying.
8) You Still Can’t Vote By Majority
I don’t know what happened with this one, but they introduced map voting to Black Ops so we could collectively vote which map we want to play next, and then they turn around and remove the ability to vote more than twice. So basically, what the people want is ok, but only twice, then we’re forced into another map.
I can only imagine this had something to do with people constantly voting for Nuketown, but wasn’t that the point? Giving people the option to vote for what they wanted to play in the first place? That’s what makes the idea cool, not some watered down version of the ability to chose. I happen to like smaller maps, and I personally am pretty tired of being forced to play these huge maps that no one wants to play (ok, maybe it’s mostly me and some select others), but some people do prefer playing smaller maps more often. If they let us chose between a big map and a small map every time, maybe I’d be a little more satisfied, but you can’t give people the ability to do something cool and then take it away and expect them to remain just as content, this is one of those times.
9) Default Multiplayer Auto-Aim
On any Call of Duty I’ve ever played, if I see someone on the enemy team coming my way and I have my red dot pointed in their direction, once they are almost in my sights, my red dot sight will actually move away from the enemy running towards me as if they had some kind of invisible force field around them mildly pushing my sight away from their body.
I really don’t know what the hell this is about but it’s been bothering me for years and it’s serious bullshit. It’s been in every single Call of Duty I’ve ever played and I can only assume it’s supposed to offer some kind of assistance to players but mine seems to do more damage than good and it hurts my ability to accurately shoot people. It causes you to have to overcompensate with the left stick just to get the red dot on the enemy when it should have been able to just stay where it was in the first place so I can start firing when the enemy runs in front of my sight. I’ve tried turning off any auto-aim options but this one seems to be built right into the game. I’m totally open to suggestions on how to fix whatever the hell this is in the first place but otherwise I wish they’d just take it the hell out or make it work right, one or the other.
10) Losing Everything When You Prestige
I understand wanting to give you some kind of way to keep building up your guy, but what’s the point of doing it if you’re only going to end up worse off than someone who’s ranked lower than you? There is no point. Oh gee, I get some pretty player card backgrounds and 5 more custom class slots (that I don’t actually need at all) if I prestige, how absolutely amazing! Not.
Let’s get to the point here, you don’t punish players who work harder and do better, you just don’t do it. You also don’t take away the simple ability to just check your damn combat record. I mean what the hell is the point of that? I went on a tear last night, I must have won 16 games in a row in first place, positive k/d ratios every time, and then I decided to Prestige, only to realize I lost my combat record too.
What exactly… is the point of taking away the ability to see our stats?
Also, if you have to work real hard to get guns, why do you want to make people have to deal with the same shitty guns over and over again? Why not just let people unlock them once and then they can just build it from there? Was the creativity running dry and you had to have people do the same damn thing 15 times over again? Argh!
Next time you guys are at the drawing board for what to add in Call of Duty Prestige levels, please give someone else a call for some extra help, because if the only thing that’s going to be changing is an icon to say that you endured pointless suffering, then there’s zero logical reasons why anyone should prestige, ever.
Oh, and those Prestige lobbies go right along with that too since they’re really nothing special either, all you need to do is spend enough time playing and eventually you’ll unlock them all, it’s not like you actually have to be a specially skilled player to play in a “Prestige” lobby.
So basically, anyone with nothing else to do, an XBox, and a controller, can Prestige. Really? But wait, doesn’t Prestige usually stand for something special?
Good question! Let’s consult the dictionary!
/prɛˈstiʒ, -ˈstidʒ/ Show Spelled[pre-steezh, -steej]
reputation or influence arising from success, achievement, rank, or other favorable attributes.
distinction or reputation attaching to a person or thing and thus possessing a cachet for others or for the public: The new discothèque has great prestige with the jet set.
having or showing success, rank, wealth, etc.
Hmmm, well that’s very interesting…. it would appear that the dictionary is indicating that perhaps the Call of Duty series may actually be bending the definition of the word since all of these definitions clearly define “success” or a reputation which indicates success was attained, I don’t see anything here that indicates simply spending a shit ton of time would also qualify for prestige!
So is Prestige mode actually kinda bullshit designed to keep players playing the game endlessly since there’s really nothing else to do?!
(Of course it is and we still love it, I just wish controllers were more durable)
Well that’s it for my list, so what’s (if anything) on yours?

I’m done with your career mode, and I’m breaking up with it for good. Why? Because you have treated me in a way that is not respectful of the $64.xx I spent on you at GameStop, essentially paying for your VISA and legal immigration status in my home. How dare you cheat with such utter bullshit after I spent months waiting for your arrival in the first place? Reserving your spot on that flight to the store, going out of my way to pick you up when you arrived, and ensuring a top level place on the stack of ex-games still renting space on my TV stand because their parents wouldn’t take them back home. You’re nothing but a pain in the ass child who doesn’t know when to quit poking. I mean, seriously? If this is what you call maturity, then this relationship was doomed from the start… › Continue reading
So I’ve been hanging out with my buddies here as usual and of course doing our gaming thing, but lately a few more people have been coming by to chill with us and of course they’re wanting to get in on the gaming that’s happening. Despite a big ol’ stack of games here between XBox 360 and PS3, we were left scratching our heads › Continue reading
So I been playing Skate 2 now for a few days and so far the game has been freakin great, and I’m sure I’ll be writing a much better review of the overall game itself after I get some more play time in. But right now, all I gotta say is WTF is with all the stupid ass pedestrians walking around in front of you when you’re trying to complete challenges?! Who’s brilliant idea was it to add in random people purposely walking in front of you when you already have to sit there and try to accomplish a task that’s hard enough as it is?!
I wouldn’t be so bothered if it was just a few people walking around and you had to only miss them here and there › Continue reading
